One million could die of Covid in China by 2023: Research

With the lifting of corona restrictions, the infection of the virus in China may increase at a large rate, and even more than 1 million people may die of corona in the country in 2023. The US-based research institute Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has reported such fears.

IHME director Christopher Murray said on Friday, according to the forecast, the corona infection in China will be at its peak around April 1 next year. By that time of the year, one-third of China’s total population will be infected with the virus. And the number of deaths due to Corona will reach 3 lakh 22 thousand.

The Chinese government lifted the corona restrictions amid protests in December. Since then, infections have been increasing in the country. Lunar New Year will be celebrated in China next month. It is feared that corona may spread among the country’s 1.4 billion population around the festival.

Christopher Murray said China’s zero-corona policy (Zero-Covid) may have been effective in preventing earlier forms of the virus. However, it will be impossible for the country to contain the strong micron type.

China’s health authorities have not reported any deaths from the virus since the lifting of the restrictions. The country last reported a death from the virus on December 3. Total deaths in China so far due to Corona are 5 thousand 235.

Many of the experts are again saying that the corona infection in China will reach its peak in January. About 60 percent of the country’s people may be affected by corona at this time. Those most at risk are the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

Meanwhile, the information provided by the University of Hong Kong says that between December 2022 and January 2023, the corona restrictions will be lifted from various provinces in China. During this period, 684 out of every 1 million people may die of corona in the country.
